The EMT

From VIRAL SPIRAL — A collection of poems by Sarah P. Ross

Another call, another call
Back and again you must go
“Why, you cry, is coronavirus all that I know?”
Nightmare of sorrows
Can’t breathe, they can’t breathe
Another ride to another hospital
Even voluntarily for free.
To stay up all night
You do not care
The urgent need just won’t stop
To sleep you don’t dare.
Another call, another call
Back and again you must go
Will you also catch this virus
You don’t know.
You hold their cold hand
The most you can do
So feeble and frail
It’s unfair it’s not flu.
Flashing lights and sirens is all you see and hear
Another trip, another hospital
arriving again near.
You’ve been told many won’t make it
People are dropping like flies
But they’re all precious people
That’s why that you try
As you rescue another
And pray they don’t die.
